David Alan Grier is the author of "When Computers Were Human" (Princeton University Press, 2005) and is a columnist for Computer magazine.  He has written extensively on the interaction of computers and society.  

A third generation computer scientist, as his father worked for Burroughs Computers and his grandmother was trained in the methods of scientific computation when she studied mathematics at the University of Michigan he is also the President-elect of the Computer Society for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
